The decisions are live!

This is a common expression in our office after decisions are completed and are made available to applicants. This week, we sent out more than 11,300 decisions! Many of these decisions were admits, welcoming 9,600 students as admits to the Class of 2017. The students who are among the admitted ranks are academically talented – most have grades that place them in the top 30% of their graduating class and have average SAT’s of 1865. More importantly, this group of admitted students is accomplished – with volunteer work, Eagle Scout, thousands of hours of community service, world travelers, honors students, song writers, published novelists…some of the best in the country.

We were not able to offer admission to all our applicants. In some cases, the application decision is deferred. This means that applicants will be considered as part of the regular applicant pool and an application decision will be sent by mid-March. Students who are deferred are encouraged to send semester grades as well as any additional information that would be helpful in our review. UVM does not conduct interviews; deferred students are welcome to visit campus as part of their continued college search.

In other cases, we had to deny admission to students. Conversations that we have had with students in these cases are about how UVM can be possible in the future. Typically students who take college-level courses and earn at least a recommended 2.8 in a year of full-time coursework. Our Coordinator of Transfer Admissions, Gabe Rodriguez, is happy to help students plan their path to UVM. In addition, we have our Guaranteed Admission Program, allowing students to take UVM courses and earn a minimum of a 3.0 gap in order to be guaranteed admission to UVM.

We encourage all our our admitted students to join our Facebook community – a great way to begin to get to know other admitted UVM students. Admitted students should check their email for an invitation to fb.uvm.edu.

I know that this is a time of celebration as well as disappointment for students. As students checked their status last night, we watched as some of our students said yes – and paid their acceptance fee within minutes of viewing their admission! We celebrate the successes of all the students graduating from high school this year and I am glad that so many students have put UVM on their list. Can’t wait to see who else says yes.
